Where you stay shapes a wellness journey more than which treatments you book. Here is how the island's regions actually differ.
The west coast: Beruwala and Bentota
Sri Lanka's classical Ayurveda belt, and where the long-established physician-led centres are. Ninety minutes from the airport, which matters when you land at 3am. Warm, humid and not especially scenic in places — you come here for the medicine, not the view. Best for serious treatment programmes and Panchakarma.
The south coast: Talalla, Tangalle, Weligama
Quieter, prettier and more yoga-led. Small shalas, sea-facing treatment rooms, and bays where nothing much happens. Three to four hours from Colombo by expressway. Best for yoga and meditation retreats, relaxation, and the recovery phase after a treatment course.
Galle
A walled colonial town for travellers who want calm without total isolation: good vegetarian kitchens, walkable ramparts, boutique retreats in restored houses. Best for shorter stays and first-timers nervous about remoteness.
Kandy and the central highlands
500 metres up, meaningfully cooler, and the island's spiritual centre. Forest reserve walks start near the town. Best for meditation, temple visits and travellers who cannot sleep in coastal humidity.
Ella and Nuwara Eliya
1,000 and 1,900 metres respectively. Mist, tea gardens, cold mornings, wood fires at the higher altitude. The most restorative air on the island and, by a distance, the best sleep. Best for walking, stillness and anyone who finds the tropics oppressive.
Sinharaja and the rainforest
A UNESCO lowland rainforest with simple lodges at its edge. Dawn birdsong, leeches after rain, very little phone signal. Best for two or three nights of genuine quiet inside a longer journey, not for a full programme.
Sigiriya and the Cultural Triangle
Dry-zone plains, ancient rock fortresses and forest monasteries. Hot in the middle of the day. Best for a short, meaningful pause — sunrise climbs and meditation in places built for it — rather than a base.
A shape that works for most people
Eight to ten nights of treatment on the west or south coast, then four or five nights in the hills to sleep, walk and let it settle. If you only have a week, stay on one coast and do not move.
